The Quebec Provincial Police Association (APPQ) and the government asked the Ministry of Labor to appoint a special conciliator on Wednesday evening.
“The conciliator will have the mandate to try to get the parties to agree on a new agreement in principle aimed at the renewal of the 2015-2022 employment contract to be presented as soon as possible to the members of the APPQ for approval,” indicated the APPQ in a press release.
The 5,700 SQ agents have not had a collective agreement for more than two years. This expired in March 2022.
On April 2, the APPQ urged the Legault government to accelerate talks by the start of the summer period.
“The APPQ has presented numerous proposals that promote rapid deployment capacity and positive reinforcement of resources. Other recommendations, such as those on the training of police officers, must also be prioritized in light of the coroner’s reports which have been accumulating, without follow-up, for years,” wrote the president of the union, Jacques Painchaud, in a statement.
“The coming summer represents a critical period for police personnel. Should we remember that in recent years, Quebec has been faced with significant spring floods and forest fires of unprecedented magnitude? It is all the more important to speed up the negotiation process,” he added.
The police then indicated that they were going to increase “the means of raising awareness so that the pace of negotiations could accelerate”.
