France holds the record for the number of speed bumps: it has more than 450,000. According to motorists’ associations, too many of them do not comply with standards.

Fearing for your bumper when approaching a speed bump that is a little too high, braking at the last moment, going around it, by car or by bike, each one has their own method to spare their suspensions and their bodywork. France has 450,000 speed bumps, 90% of which exceed the regulatory height of 10 cm. Installation and height are regulated: 10 cm maximum, in a zone 30 where traffic does not exceed 3,000 cars or 300 trucks per day.

Insufficient control

But no one is in control, according to motorists’ associations. Some even pose a risk of slipping for both wheels. To raise awareness of the issue, 40 Million Motorists is preparing a charter which it will present to the association of mayors of France.
