What is left in Gaza? The IDF destroyed the country’s major cities, forcing Palestinians into a mass exodus. The considerable damage is only just beginning to be quantified.

A field of ruins as far as the eye can see. Cities like Gaza or Khan Younes were almost completely destroyed by Israeli bombings according to the UN. Since the start of the war in October 2023, the Palestinian enclave has suffered an unprecedented level of destruction, not seen since World War II. The extent of the damage has already been quantified. “The overall reconstruction of Gaza, according to our estimates today, will cost between 40 and 50 billion dollars at least”figures Abdallah Al Dardari, Under-Secretary General of the United Nations. “In Gaza, we are almost back to the 80s”he adds.

The war is still far from over

The Gaza Strip, a land now uninhabitable and polluted. More than 800,000 tonnes of asbestos are believed to be present in the rubble. The Palestinians know that they have lost everything and that everything will have to be rebuilt if they one day return. “This war has destroyed everything, there is no more economic activity, no more industry, no more commerce, no more agriculture, no more schools, no more nothing”, deplores a resident. The enclave is said to be littered with more than 30 million tons of debris, much more than in two years of war in Ukraine. “We live on a very small territory that cannot withstand large-scale destruction”, relates a Gazan. And the war is still far from over. The Israeli army offensive continues in the Gaza Strip.
