An application well known to motorists, Waze is at the heart of a controversy. Some residents are annoyed to see hundreds of cars passing through their streets because of shortcuts offered by navigation tools.

An endless stream of trucks and cars crosses the small village of Yvrac, in Gironde, because of the “Waze effect”, named after the GPS application. Faced with saturation of the main roads at the entrance to the Bordeaux metropolis, motorists are directed towards a departmental road to save time. An untenable situation for local residents and even dangerous for the mayor of the town. “The lane is often not wide enough when cars pass each other or when they pass trucks”explains Olivier Lafeuillade, the mayor of Yvrac.

Small saturated communities

GPS applications have gradually become the nightmare of these small towns. Local residents no longer appreciate seeing their departmental road transformed into an alternative route. To counterattack, the mayor of Camphin-en-Carembault (North) installed stop signs. If GPS applications are of great help to motorists, their consequences remain significant for small towns.
