Some mayors are concerned about a lack of law enforcement in their cities during the Paris Olympics this summer. The Ministry of the Interior assures that there will be no problem thanks to the zero leave system.
On beaches, in city centers or tourist sites, will there be enough police officers to carry out daily missions during the Olympic Games? Several elected officials are worried, notably the mayor (Les Républicains) of Nîmes (Gard), Jean-Paul Fournier. Part of the local national police force will be sent to other cities for the competition. The Gard prefecture, like the Ministry of the Interior, indicate that the missing staff will be fully compensated.
CRS lifeguards not present on the beaches
Gérald Darmanin, Minister of the Interior, affirmed that there will be “police officers and gendarmes throughout the national territory, even more than usual, since 100% of leave has been refused”. The solution of not granting any vacation for police officers during the Olympic period does not satisfy the unions. Another problem arises on the coast. Normally, in summer, CRS lifeguards are deployed as reinforcements to ensure the safety of the beaches. They will be absent this year. Cities like Saint-Malo (Ille-et-Vilaine) will therefore have to recruit more SNSM rescuers.
