The prospect of a trial recedes. The Spanish public prosecutor’s office requested “the dismissal of any further action” in the judicial investigation for corruption targeting the wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Thursday April 25. He thus wishes “cancellation” of the procedure opened after a complaint from an association, which led Pedro Sánchez to announce on Wednesday, to everyone’s surprise, that he was considering resigning.
The complaint at the origin of the investigation was filed by Manos Limpias, a collective considered close to the extreme right, which admitted in a press release released Wednesday evening that it was based exclusively on “press information”whose “veracity” must be determined by justice, reports the Spanish national daily Publico.
Pedro Sánchez will communicate his decision on Monday
According to the online media El Confidencial, which revealed the existence of this investigation, justice is particularly interested in the links of Begoña Gómez, wife of Pedro Sánchez, with the Spanish tourist group Globalia. The leader of Spain’s main opposition party accused Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Thursday of giving “show” in the eyes of the world. “Spain is not made for letters or soap operas, presidents must give explanations”castigated Miguel Tellado on his X account.
Pedro Sánchez described the accusations against his wife as “harassment and demolition strategy” led by “media strongly influenced by the right and the extreme right” and supported, according to him, by the conservative opposition. He will announce his decision whether or not to return to government on Monday.
