A Russian journalist had already been killed on April 20 in a Ukrainian drone strike, also in the Zaporizhia region. It is one of four Ukrainian territories that Russia has claimed to annex in 2022, along with Kherson, Donetsk and Luhansk, even though its army does not fully control them. In the summer of 2023, Ukrainian forces attempted, but failed, to break through Russian defense lines in the Zaporizhzhia region, where there is a major nuclear power plant, regularly targeted by air strikes.
