UEFA has ruled out the possibility for Brest to play at the Francis Le Blé stadium, in the event of the club qualifying for the European Cup, France Bleu Breizh Izel learned, Monday April 22, from a source close to the matter, confirming in part of information from the newspaper l’Equipe. This decision was taken due to the dilapidation of the stadium.

Brest is getting closer to Europe, currently 3rd in Ligue 1 four days before the end of the championship. Behind the scenes, Brest leaders are preparing for this potential deadline. And if they had long hoped to be able to play at the Francis Le Blé stadium, this possibility was ruled out by UEFA.

Indeed, three of the four stands are built on tubular structures – they rest on metal structures – which is prohibited by UEFA regulations: “The stands must be attached to foundations capable of supporting a significant weight and not cannot be based on tubular or scaffolding structures, nor contain such structures. The materials, design and construction of the stands must be clearly intended for permanent use”, specifies the regulation in its article 18.

As a result, only the Foucauld stand could accommodate supporters. The only problem is that its capacity is only 5,000 places. However, UEFA, in its article 17, requires a minimum of 8,000 places to be able to host European matches. UEFA ordered Stade Brestois to find an alternative stadium. Because you don’t necessarily need to play in your usual venue to compete in Europe, you just need to play on national territory. The Brest leaders have until the end of the season to give their response.
