(Hilton Head Island) Masters champion Scottie Scheffler delivered another bogey-free round at the RBC Heritage on Saturday, shooting a 63 that gave him a one-shot lead.
Since Bernhard Langer in 1985, no Masters Tournament champion has followed up with another victory the following week.
The only other Augusta champion to win the following week was Gary Player in 1978.
“I think when I’m playing my best, sometimes I feel like I’m competing against myself a little bit,” Scheffler said. I try to stay as focused as possible. »
Scheffler has a total of 197, 16 shots under par.
Sepp Straka birdied a 15-foot putt on the final hole for a 65, coming within one shot of the lead.
Collin Morikawa (68), winner of two major tournaments, made a mistake late, missing a 10-foot putt that would have earned him a par. He is two moves behind.
Ludvig Aberg, second at the Masters Tournament, is three shots from the top as are Sahith Theegala (67) and Patrick Rodgers (68).
Since last August, Scheffler has played 39 rounds in a row where he has scored par or better.
“We all expect him to play well,” Aberg said. I try to focus on myself and make sure I hit the ball the way I want to. »
Rodgers is the only player within five shots of Scheffler who has yet to win a PGA tournament.
“His contact with the ball is incredible,” Rodgers said. For me to have a chance of winning, I have to play superbly from start to finish (Sunday). I can’t wait to face the challenge. »
Canadians at the tournament are Corey Conners (66 for 206), Adam Hadwin (70, 207), Mackenzie Hughes (75, 207) Adam Svensson (70, 208) and Nick Taylor (69, 210).
