As the number of contaminations explodes, self-tests are now decisive in the government’s fight against the spread of the Omicron variant. But are they really reliable? Response elements.

In this pharmacy, for the past few weeks, two questions have come up: are there self-tests available? And are they reliable? For them to be effective, they must be done correctly, and the user must take the time to read the instructions for use. “You must read the instructions for use, soak them up and start the test afterwards. (…) If we respect it, the reliability is 99%“, assures a pharmacist.

According to an American study, the self-test would be especially effective for contagious people, at 92% when they have symptoms. Another study, however, shows much lower rates, with 44% effectiveness in asymptomatic, 63% in symptomatic. But epidemiologist Antoine Flahault remains convinced of the usefulness of the tool: “We must not seek zero risk, we must seek to reduce the risk and self-tests can reduce the risk“.
