Canada regained the title of the Women’s World Hockey Championship on Sunday, winning 6-5 in overtime against the Americans.
Danielle Serdachny scored on a power play at 5:16 of the overtime period.
The Canadians thus obtained their revenge in Utica, after losing 6-3 in the final against the Americans last year in Brampton, Ontario.
Captain Marie-Philip Poulin scored her first two goals of the tournament and was named player of the match. Erin Ambrose, Julia Gosling and Emily Clark also made the red light sparkle. Ann-Renée Desbiens made 19 saves.
Caroline Harvey, Hilary Knight, Laila Edwards, Megan Keller and Alex Carpenter scored for the Americans. Aerin Frankel stopped 25 shots.
Poulin missed the target on a breakaway in the overtime period and Sarah Fillier was unable to capitalize on another excellent scoring chance.
The Americans were then punished because they had too many players on the ice. Serdachny ended the game with three seconds left in the power play.
The Americans defeated Canada 1-0 in overtime during the preliminary round.
It was the eighth time the two rival nations needed overtime or a shootout to decide a gold medal game.
