Albert Cartier appointed AS Nancy Lorraine coach

AS Nancy Lorraine has (finally) a new coach for its first team. The club had not had a coach since the end of December and the decision of Benoît Pedretti not to continue the interim. After the Rennes match in the Coupe de France, Pedretti, who had extended for one match, called on his leaders not to procrastinate. The club has set its sights on a former member of the house, Albert Cartier, 61 years old. He signed a six-month contract with a one-year option in case of continuation.

Manage my choices

The native of Vesoul knows the forest of Haye well, having played for the ASNL from 1980 to 1987. It was then at FC Metz that he pursued his playing career before becoming a coach. In recent seasons, Albert Cartier has managed Sochaux, Gazelec Ajaccio as well as Bastia Borgo. One last National experience that came to nothing. Arrived last spring in Corsica, Albert Cartier could not have done better than 16th but his club had been drafted by the FFF. Red lantern after 12 days this season, Cartier was ousted by its leaders in early November. The club is always last in National.

Crowned best Ligue 2 coach in 2014

His main success as a coach is to have allowed FC Metz, then in National, to return to Ligue 1 in two seasons. Two consecutive climbs which allowed Albert Cartier to be crowned best coach of Ligue 2 at the UNFP trophies in 2014. It is paradoxically this success which would tend to offend the ultras of AS Nancy Lorraine who made it known during the match from Rennes that they did not want to see Albert Cartier on the bench at Nancy.

Albert Cartier was at the helm of FC Metz during the derby lost to Saint-Symphorien in 2013 3-0 by the Nancéiens. On the AS Nancy Lorraine website, President Gauthier Ganaye explains that he is not taking “this decision in the hope of becoming popular” but because he “considers that Albert is the man for the job” and can bring “rigor, discipline, organization and fighting spirit”.
