The end-of-life bill, presented to the Council of Ministers on Wednesday April 10, provides for assistance in dying under specific conditions, as well as a component on palliative care.
In the text proposed on Wednesday April 10 in the Council of Ministers, five conditions must be met by a patient to benefit from assistance in dying: being of legal age, of French nationality, capable of discernment, suffering from a serious and incurable illness, with a life-threatening prognosis and presenting signs of unbearable physical or psychological suffering.
Palliative care absent from certain departments
“At that point, he asked a doctor for an examination.”, indicates Catherine Vautrin, Minister of Labor, Health and Solidarity. The doctor then takes the advice of another specialist doctor and medical staff before making his decision. Doctors will be able to oppose this act by using their conscience clause. This text also provides for the strengthening of palliative care, particularly in 20 departments where no hospital unit exists. The government promises an investment of one billion euros over ten years.
