Jake McCabe scored 1:30 into overtime and the Maple Leafs beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 on Monday night in Toronto.

Auston Matthews scored his 65e goal, a high among scorers this season, in addition to obtaining an assist. Matthew Knies also scored in the victory and Ilya Samsonov stopped 30 shots.

Rickard Rakell and Drew O’Connor scored the goals for the Penguins, who are 6-0-3 in their last nine games.

Alex Nedeljkovic made 20 saves for the Penguins, who have 84 points and are tied with the Detroit Red Wings for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Matthews gave the Maple Leafs the lead at 1:22 of the third period, after just three seconds elapsed on Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson’s penalty.

Matthews has six goals in his last five games. He could become the first scorer of 70 goals in a season in more than three decades.

The Penguins tied the score at 2-2 when O’Connor pushed the loose puck into the back of the net. It was the 14the winger’s goal of the season.

Rakell opened the scoring by scoring his 14e goal of the season, at 18:06 of play in the first period.
