On the occasion of the year commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Liberation, the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron visited Haute-Savoie on Sunday April 7. He paid tribute to the victims of Nazism.
He arrives at the Plateau des Glières (Haute-Savoie) at midday on Sunday April 7. Emmanuel Macron is beginning a long seven-month cycle to commemorate a major event in our history: the Liberation. The first stop for the president is at Glières. 80 years ago, many resistance fighters faced the German army as well as the Vichy militia. “The 129 martyrs of Glières contributed to saving the honor of France”commented Emmanuel Macron.
A trip to Izieu
The president’s second stop, for this commemoration, takes place in Izieu, in Ain. In a house in this town, the Gestapo rounded up 44 Jewish children on April 6, 1944. In this place steeped in history, Emmanuel Macron was able to interact with the people there. On April 16, it will be in the Vercors that the Head of State will continue the commemoration of the Liberation.
