Stephen Strasburg, the 2019 World Series MVP whose career was derailed by injuries, was officially listed as retired on Saturday.
This was to be expected, but the question was more about when and how it would happen. In August, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that Strasburg had made the decision that he would no longer pitch.
Aged 35, Strasburg was selected first overall in the 2009 draft. He led the Washington Nationals to their first championship in their history.
The right-handed pitcher has not been on his team’s mound since June 9, 2022, his last start in the Majors.
The American has thrown only 528 pitches since signing a seven-year, $245 million contract in December 2019. He did not participate in the Nationals’ 2023 and 2024 training camps.
