According to the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), the vehicle was traveling east on Saint-Patrick Street when a collision occurred at the intersection of Avenue Dollard, with a van driving towards the North. The SUV-type vehicle then deviated from its course, struck the sidewalk and descended a steep slope leading to the canal, where it tipped over.

The vehicle came to rest on the ice, which cracked but did not yield under its weight.

The water rescue teams from the SPVM and the Fire Safety Service were dispatched to the scene to extirpate the two people. The lady was declared dead at the scene. The man, also in his seventies, was taken to hospital.

“An SPVM collision investigation team is on site to determine the causes of the accident. Could the sun or the weather conditions have played a role? These are elements that will be evaluated, ”says spokesperson Raphaël Bergeron.
