Indonesia: explosions at army ammunition depot near Jakarta

Multiple explosions rocked a military munitions warehouse in Indonesia on the outskirts of the capital Jakarta on Saturday, the army said, with no immediate reports of casualties.

The first explosion was heard around 6:00 p.m. (11:00 GMT) at a depot used to store expired ammunition inside a military compound in West Java, near Jakarta.

“At 6:05 p.m., smoke was seen in a warehouse and explosions occurred,” Mohamad Hasan, military chief of the city of Jakarta, said in a televised news conference.

The fire ravaged the warehouse and authorities evacuated nearby residents to safer areas, the military leader added.

“We assure you that there are no deaths at the moment, but we cannot enter the site because there are still minor explosions,” he explained.
