THE Khorasan is a country that has not existed since the Middle Ages. It is an area located on the borders of Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan and is the home region of the Islamic State terrorist group in Khorasan, the Islamic State-K, or even EI-K. The EI-K propaganda organ makes absolutely no secret of its intentions. After Russia and the Moscow attack on Friday March 22, it will be India, China, Europe and the United States of course. All the major powers have been warned, their territory will be targeted by the jihadists of Khorasan. Several attacks have also been foiled in Germany, France, Belgium and Spain. This violent branch of the Islamic State is very active and determined to strike the countries supposedly best armed.

The Moscow attack is not the first feat of arms by EI-K. The most recent dates from January in Iran, it concerns the double suicide attack during the funeral ceremony in tribute to Qassem Soleimani, the former commander of the Revolutionary Guards. Moreover, this attack reveals part of the strategy of this Afghan terrorist group. “We have observed in recent years that the range of action of EI-K has gradually widened. There were first local attacks in provinces of Afghanistan and Pakistan, then a development of capabilities to internationally by targeting states in the region like Iran, Turkey and of course this recent attack in Russia. They will continue this dynamic. It will not be a surprise if, in the next six months, they try to something new, unfortunately”explained Wednesday Aaron Zelin, expert in terrorism at the Washington Institute, to the German channel Deutsche Welle.

Ukraine, Gaza… current conflicts are favorable to EI-K

What we also note is that EI-K is blurring the lines and relying on a sort of saturation of threats at the international level, according to the conclusions which emerge from several analyzes on Russian security flaws. After the attack in Moscow on Friday March 22, the research center of Russian opponent Mikhail Khodorkovsky asserts, for example, that intelligence notes were transmitted to the highest level of the State and that these reports suggest a “increased likelihood of terrorist attack” on Russian territory by radicalized Tajik elements. American intelligence also claimed to have alerted Moscow. But the Kremlin only trusts itself and its attention is elsewhere. Russian power is simply too consumed by political repression on its territory and of course by the conflict in Ukraine and its fight against the West.

The tensions between China and the United States in the Pacific, Ukraine, the Gaza Strip, all these conflicts involve all the military powers on the planet. In all these countries, the intelligence and security services, the general staffs, everyone is focused on a risk of large-scale confrontation. This is the opposite of the modus operandi of terrorist groups who act through more confidential networks, infiltrated into populations, outside the military framework, and when attention is diverted to other threats, jihadists take advantage of it to identify areas of weakness.
