Gabriel Attal wants to reduce the duration of compensation “by several months” without going below twelve months

Gabriel Attal was expected on TF1, Wednesday March 27, for a thirty-minute interview, after a government seminar in Matignon devoted to work, at a time when social spending such as compensation for the unemployed is in the executive’s sights to fill the deficit, which slipped in 2023. “There will be a reform of unemployment insurance this year”, he confirmed. “The objective of falling below 3% deficit in 2027” is retained. The government is looking for savings after the public deficit skidded to 5.5% of GDP in 2023, according to INSEE, or 15.8 billion euros more than the government’s forecasts. Ten billion euros in cuts have already been made in mid-February on the 2024 budget, but additional savings will be found this year, warned the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire. “We are maintaining the objective of falling below 3% in 2027. (…) We will present the trajectory to achieve this in mid-April”he detailed.

“Get out of the 35-hour shackles”. The Prime Minister said he was opposed to any reduction in working hours. “I am not in favor of reducing the length of working hours”recalled Gabriel Attal, questioned about the experiment of the four-day week in administrations. “We need to get out of this straitjacket of 35 hours a week, give more flexibility”he continued.
