In Brazil, deforestation does not only concern the Amazon rainforest. Further south, in Barreiras, the Cerrado savannah is also disappearing, due in particular to soybean, corn and cotton plantations as far as the eye can see.
In Brazil, every year, the Amazon rainforest burns or is destroyed by the hands of man. Deforestation also affects another region, further south, less known but just as rich in biodiversity. The Brazilian savannah of the Cerrado, in Barreiras, is in fact disappearing. Thousands of hectares are now reserved for crops, putting a fragile ecosystem in great danger.
A great agricultural power
In this savannah, it is not uncommon today to come across many tractors. If Brazil has become a great agricultural power, it owes it in particular to its crops. Soya, corn and cotton are planted as far as the eye can see by Brazilian farmers. Everything has accelerated very quickly in recent years. On the 2 million km² of the Cerrado, half of the savannah vegetation has already disappeared.
