In Cape Town, South Africa, the National Assembly burned to the ground on Sunday January 2. It was in this building that the racist apartheid regime ended over thirty years ago.
In the images of an Internet user, the roof of the South African Parliament ravaged by flames, in Cape Town (South Africa). The fire started in the morning, around 5 a.m., in a wing of the building, before spreading to the more recent parts. “The roof of the building collapsed on one side, and the fire spread over the new assembly. Firefighters have detected large cracks in the wall, and this is of great concern to us.“, reports Jean-Pierre Smith, head of security. The damage is considerable.
“This fire will of course be investigated. A person has just been arrested, he is being questioned”, specifies the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa. The man arrested will appear in court on Tuesday, January 4. It was inside this building steeped in history that the first stages of the end of apartheid took place, culminating in the inauguration ceremony of Nelson Mandela in 1994.
