30 years of Sidaction: prejudices are stubborn
(franceinfo)
The weekend of March 23 marks 30 years of Sidaction in France. But after three decades, prejudices about HIV persist, and are even increasing among young people.
Sidaction celebrates its thirtieth anniversary on the weekend of March 23. However, after three decades, prejudices about HIV persist, and are increasing among 15-25 year olds. According to the IFOP, one in four young people say they “uncomfortable” with the idea of working with an HIV-positive person. For Sidaction representatives, this worrying observation shows that it is more than necessary to continue the information work. “At school, since the 2001 law, there are supposed to be three sexuality education sessions per year, and this is not the case”denounces Jennifer Pasquier, scientific director of Sidaction.
Medical misconceptions die hard
From a medical point of view too, misconceptions are stubborn. In fact, 30% of young people consider that HIV can be transmitted by a kiss, and for a quarter of them, by sharing the same glass or the same plate. For one in three young people, there would be a vaccine or treatment against this disease. Today, in the world, 39 million people are living with AIDS.
