New images show inside Fukushima nuclear reactor

The operator of the stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant (TEPCO) sent two drones into one of three reactors badly damaged by the 2011 tsunami, which still contain tons of highly radioactive melted fuel and debris.

A new video, released Thursday, shows displaced control equipment and misshapen materials. It also highlights the arduous task of dismantling the plant.

According to experts, there are more than 800 tons of fuel debris in the three reactors. It is in reactor number 1 – the one into which the drones were sent – that there would be the most melted debris at the bottom of the containment.

TEPCO plans to analyze the data obtained in order to study ways to remove this debris. This risky operation is expected to take decades.
