Emmanuel Macron promised to “making life impossible for drug dealers”during a surprise visit to Marseille on Tuesday March 19, thanks to a police operation “XXL”. The next day, the watchers were back at the bottom of the towers of the city of La Castellane. A brief one-hour appearance, on one of the city’s major traffic points, according to a franceinfo reporter present on site.
On the evening of the president’s visit, dealers warned consumers on encrypted Telegram messaging: “Notice to all customers. We are sorry for the annoying situation. The police remained for a very, very long time”. Dealers therefore invited consumers to come back on Wednesday from 10 a.m. The lookouts were back, posted at all the entrances to the city of La Castellane. Entrances blocked by roadblocks of shopping carts or broken scooters.
The points of sale reopened for an hour, until the CRS arrived. Five vans heard the screams of the lookouts echoing between the towers. The sellers then disappeared before the police even had time to park.
The game of cat and mouse
It’s a usual game between police and sellers. The traffickers are skillful, they adapt and are able to reopen their deal points very quickly, even if it only lasts an hour. A police source assures that operations in La Castellane will be daily for several weeks. Tuesday, the CRS remained to patrol the city until 11 p.m. The police chief will in turn be at La Castelane on Wednesday, late in the afternoon.
