The National Rally is leading the polls for the European elections scheduled for June 9. Moreover, the party’s speeches are by far the most numerous in plenary sessions at the European Parliament in Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin) – 1,016 compared to 205 for renew Europe France – during this mandate. However, its leader, Jordan Bardella, is absent in Brussels (Belgium), where most of the work takes place. “I have never seen him in this commission”, assures Ana Miranda, EELV vice-president of the petitions committee. After examining the reports of this commission, it appears that the president of the far-right party has not voted there since May 2022.
Boycott in the name of the “sanitary cordon”
But if the RN MEPs have had very little influence on the legislative texts (six reports in one mandate), it is because they are boycotted by the other groups, who refuse to entrust them with positions of responsibility. This is called here “the sanitary cordon”.
