Hurricanes win thanks to significant comeback

Brady Skjei and Steven Lorentz both had two goals and the Carolina Hurricanes came in from behind to defeat the Columbus Blue Jackets 7-4 on Saturday.

Ethan Bear moved the ropes to give the Hurricanes a 5-4 lead and Lorentz increased the score to 6-4 just 69 seconds later. Andrei Svechnikov sealed the outcome of the meeting in an empty net.

Charlie Coyle and Nick Foligno celebrate after a goal in the third period.

Charlie Coyle fired a wrist shot from the enclave after 34 seconds of overtime play to give the Boston Bruins a 4-3 win over the Buffalo Sabers on Saturday afternoon.

The goal put the finishing touches to the comeback for the Bruins, who were playing their first game in 16 days.

The Massachusetts team has seen six of its meetings scheduled since Dec. 16 be canceled due to COVID-19 protocols and the extended NHL hiatus over the holidays.

The Bruins were 3-1 behind to start the third period, but Nick Foligno and Taylor Hall scored early in the opening to force overtime.

Craig Smith was the Bruins’ other scorer, while Linus Ullmark made 21 saves. The Bruins had a 41-24 advantage in the shooting column.

Jeff Skinner and Vinnie Hinostroza were back in the game after being sidelined due to COVID-19 and they both found the back of the net. Alex Tuch hit the nail on the head on the power play, as Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen blocked 37 pucks.

The Sabers have lost their last three games and 10 of their 11 most recent encounters to the Bruins (1-9-1).

Noah Dobson hit the target at 3:52 into overtime and the New York Islanders defeated the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 on Saturday.

In the extra period, Dobson jumped onto the ice after a substitution, accepted a pass and unleashed a precise wrist shot that outmaneuvered Mikko Koskinen’s vigilance on the tackle’s side.

Dobson has scored his fifth goal of the campaign and they’ve all come in the last 10 games. He also amassed three assists during that streak.

Anders Lee and Anthony Beauvillier also found the back of the net for the Islanders, who posted a first win this season in seven attempts after regulation.

Ilya Sorokin blocked 17 pucks for the New Yorkers, who are 3-0-1 in their last four outings and 4-0-1 in their last five home games, after losing their seven first games at UBS Arena.

Leon Draisaitl scored a 25e goal this season, an NHL-high, and Darnell Nurse has blackened the scoresheet once for the Oilers, who have won just two of their last 11 games (2-7-2). Koskinen ended the game with 26 saves.

Tanner Jeannot scored twice, while Filip Forsberg and Ryan Johansen both had a goal and an assist, to lead the Nashville Predators to a 6-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday.

Nick Cousins and Roman Josi both netted the Predators’ other goals, while Mattias Ekholm added three assists to his record. Juuse Saros blocked 37 shots to help his side end a two-game losing streak.

Philipp Kurashev has been the one to put the needle on for the Blackhawks, who have bowed their spine in their three most recent outings. It was Chicago’s first game since December 18.

The Predators took a 3-0 lead in the first period, even though they were trailing 15-7 in shots. Blackhawks goaltender Collin Delia paid the price and was kicked out of the game after the first twenty.

Rather, it was Arvid Soderblom who came to the visitors’ cage at the start of the second period. His first NHL appearance didn’t start out the way he would have liked, as he was foiled by the first shot he faced.

Soderblom, a 22-year-old Swede, concluded the game with 15 saves.
