(Saalbach-Hinterglemm) Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami was crowned champion of the giant slalom World Cup and the general alpine skiing classification on Sunday, with a 10e place in Saalbach-Hinterglemm.
Federica Brignone remained her only opponent still in the running before this event and the Italian won the day’s giant slalom. However, she had to hope that Gut-Behrami finished beyond the top 15 to get the crystal globes.
Britt Richardson was the only Canadian to take part in this race. She finished in 18e place.
“It’s amazing, giant slalom has always been so important to me,” said Gut-Behrami, who won her first globe in the discipline, although she was world champion in 2021.
“I was very nervous because I really wanted to win. I skied really badly, I was just nervous, so I’m not surprised [du résultat]. »
Gut-Behrami avoided risks in both runs, finishing eighth and 17th respectivelye.
” What would you do ? I learned that sometimes you just have to stay safe and try to cross the finish line, she said. Sure, it’s not the best way to end the season performance-wise, but it’s the best way to end the season with a globe. »
This is Gut-Behrami’s second triumph in the general classification after his title in 2016. A few weeks from his 33e birthday, she is the oldest champion in history.
The Swiss could add the downhill and super-G globes next week.
