Faced with a record deficit of $11 billion, the Legault government is undertaking a major clean-up of its spending. However, there is no question of affecting the financing of private schools, immediately warns Minister Bernard Drainville.

Quebec unveiled a budget plan written in dark red ink on Tuesday. The hole in public finances is forcing the government to lift all the stones to find savings.
But already, the Minister of Education has ruled out dipping into the envelope dedicated to private educational establishments, which are largely financed by the State.

“It’s not in the cards,” said Bernard Drainville on Wednesday, in a press scrum at the National Assembly. In the coming year, Quebec will pay more than $737 million to private schools.
The minister also assures that additional investments in the school network will produce results quickly.
