For a fifth year, The duty launches its summer internship, and the registration period is officially open. In 2024, eight interns will have the chance to experience the habits and customs of the journalistic profession by evolving within our editorial staff. This paid internship is made possible thanks to the generosity of our valuable partners, Concordia University and the Fonds de recherche du Québec — Société et culture (FRQSC).
” Each summer, The duty can accommodate an increasingly large and diverse cohort of interns thanks to the renewed support of exceptional partners who share with us a resolute commitment to supporting the training of the next generation of journalists,” explains the director of Duty, Brian Myles. “We are proud that these valuable collaborations continue, because they have a real impact on the professional development of the apprentice journalists who come through our doors. »
If, for The dutythis internship is a fantastic way to contribute to the training of the next generation — interns from previous editions are now employees of the Duty —, for the selected students, it is a golden opportunity to check whether the journalistic outfit suits them.
The chosen candidates will follow the frenetic pace of journalistic production and the vagaries of editorial life. They will participate in production meetings, field assignments, and they will be able to follow all stages of content preparation, from ideation to distribution. Different sectors and journalistic styles will be offered to them, in addition to various ways of presenting information. The internship will last eight weeks, in the middle of summer, and will be supervised by experienced journalists and the information department.
This internship is taking shape for a fifth year because The duty and its partners believe that it is important to contribute to the growth of the journalistic profession by training the reporters of tomorrow. This year we are reconnecting with the FRQSC, which will allow trainees of 2e and 3e cycle trained in the field of social and human sciences to try the practice of journalism. “The success of the partnership started last year with The duty encourages us to expand our funding for science journalism internship scholarships this year. Thus, four university students in the humanities and social sciences will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves, within the newsroom, with the demanding art of making scientific research accessible. We aspire for this work to enlighten our perspectives and stimulate our thinking, thus contributing to more informed decisions,” said Louise Poissant, scientific director of the FRQSC.
Finally, The duty funds three additional internships, intended for any student following undergraduate or graduate journalism training, regardless of their university establishment.
