According to the human rights organization Memorial, Russia has more than 600 political prisoners, all causes combined.
In Russia, Roman Imanov, a journalist, was sentenced to seven years in prison for posting information about the military offensive in Ukraine. His family and colleagues protest: they denounce an unfounded accusation. “As long as they don’t arrest us, we can work and talk”, testifies a journalist. According to the human rights organization Memorial, whose leader Oleg Orlov has just been imprisoned, there are more than 600 political prisoners in Russia, for all causes.
Dissident voices in exile or in prison
Alexeï Navalny was the last major opponent active in Russia. Dissenting voices are in exile or in prison. Ilia Iachine, a former local opposition MP, was sentenced to eight years in detention in 2023, for discrediting the army. The death of Alexei Navalny was a shock for opponents of Vladimir Putin. Several days after his funeral, hundreds of Russians continue to pay tribute to him by placing flowers on his grave.
