A man shot and injured two people on Tuesday March 12 in the main bus station in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and took 17 passengers hostage on a bus, including elderly people and children, according to police.
“The hostage taker surrendered, he was arrested, all the hostages were released, they are safe”, Colonel Marco Andrade, spokesperson for the military police, then told the press, without giving more information on the identity or motive of the shooter. According to him, the shootings took place “outside” from the bus: one person was hit by three shots and another was less seriously injured.
The bus station evacuated
“A man drew a gun, started shooting and entered the bus”a witness had said earlier on the GloboNews television channel, while the bus station had been completely evacuated.
In 2000, a hostage-taking of bus passengers in a residential area left two people dead. The episode was broadcast for hours live on television, causing immense excitement, and inspired a film, Parada 174.
