Autonomy of Corsica: an agreement reached between the government and Corsican elected officials

After more than a year of negotiations, an agreement was reached in Corsica, with a text which provides for an autonomous status for the island, within the Republic.

After a year and a half of discussions, an agreement was reached between the Minister of the Interior and Corsican elected officials. The text provides for an autonomous status for the island, within the Republic. The State will retain its sovereign domains: police, army, justice. The Corsican community will be able to adapt existing laws and regulations to the specificities of the island, but also vote on laws in areas which remain to be defined.

Several steps before autonomy

Emmanuel Macron had set red lines to respect for this autonomy. The notion of “Corsican people” is not written, but that of “cultural community” is present. There is also no official Corsican language and no resident status. There are still several steps before the island can become autonomous. The Corsican Assembly must vote on it, just like the National Assembly and the Senate, then the Congress. Finally, a consultation with the Corsicans is necessary. For the moment, the Republicans refuse autonomy for the island. The government hopes for the adoption of the reform by the end of 2024.
