A night of December 31st no more agitated than usual. In total, 874 vehicles were set on fire and 441 people were arrested (including 381 placed in police custody) during New Year’s Eve, according to a press release from the Ministry of the Interior on Saturday January 1.

Gérald Darmanin was delighted on Twitter about a “decrease in violence thanks to the police force” compared to the year 2019 and thanked all the mobilized staff. If the number of burnt vehicles has indeed decreased, the number of people arrested and taken into custody has increased slightly.

During the New Year’s Eve of December 31, 2019, 1,316 vehicles were set on fire, 376 people were arrested and 314 placed in police custody. The 2020 figures are not comparable due to the curfew in effect last year.
