Catherine Vautrin was the guest of France 2’s “20 Heures” on Monday. She returned to the conditions that will be necessary to request assistance in dying.

Pedagogy about a divisive reform. Questioned on France 2, Monday March 11, the Minister of Health, Catherine Vautrin, returned to the possibility, mentioned by Emmanuel Macron, of requesting assistance in dying under certain strict conditions, which will be examined by parliament.

The minister recalled these conditions, which must be combined: being of age, having “all his discernment”be hit by “a serious and incurable illness”but also experience suffering that cannot be relieved, and have a vital prognosis committed in the short or medium term”.

A text examined from May in parliament

“We can imagine that in the short term, we are talking about a few days or a few months” and medium term “6 to 12 months”according to “reading the High Authority of Health”specified the minister, while several observers pointed out the vague nature of this formula. This short or medium term will not be “not specified in the law”according to the Elysée, but determined by the medical team according to the needs of patients. If all these criteria are present, it will be up to a medical team to decide collectively what action to take on this request.

The text of the bill must be transmitted to the Council of State within eight to ten days. It will arrive on the table of the Council of Ministers in April. Then it will be examined in plenary session at the National Assembly from May 27, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced on Monday.
