“Oppenheimer” won best film and best direction, “Anatomy of a Fall” won for best original screenplay

Christopher Nolan’s film, which won his first Oscar for best director, was the big winner of the evening with seven statuettes. As at the Golden Globes, Justine Triet’s feature film received the award for best original screenplay.

An explosive coronation. The film about the creator of the atomic bomb, Oppenheimer, by Christopher Nolan was the big winner of the 96th Oscars ceremony which was held on the night of Sunday March 10 to Monday March 11, in Los Angeles. Big favorite with 13 nominations, the feature film, which raked in more than a billion dollars at the worldwide box office, assumed its status by winning the prestigious statuette for best film.

He accumulated six other awards: best direction for the British filmmaker, best actor for Cillian Murphy, best supporting actor for Robert Downey Jr., best original score, best editing and best photo. These are the first Oscars in the career of the 53-year-old director, who had four nominations before this ceremony. Poor creatures by Yorgos Lanthimos won four Oscars: best makeup and hairstyles, best sets, best costumes and best actress for Emma Stone, who therefore beat Sandra Hüller, nominated for Anatomy of a fall.

“Total independence and freedom”

Nominated in five categories, Justine Triet’s film won the Oscar for best original screenplay. He had already been crowned in this category at the Golden Globe at the beginning of January. Very happy, the director went on stage with her companion Arthur Harari, co-writer of the Palme d’Or. “This Oscar will help me get through the midlife crisis”she said. “It’s a crazy year, it’s very glamorous tonight, but the glamor of tonight is in contrast to the beginning of this filmsaid the director, we were at home, locked up with our two children during confinement, there was no separation between writing and diapers.”

Arthur Harari highlighted the contribution of the two producers Marie-Ange Luciani and David Thion. “Things got a little crazy (…) there was nothing between us, nor above us, there was only total independence and freedom, it was the only way to us to make this film”, he assured. The director also paid tribute to the casting who “‘killed’ this script on camera”. Beaten in the categories of best film and best direction, Anatomy of a fall was also beaten for best editing. This Oscar, gleaned after a grueling campaign, consecrates the triumphant career of the 2023 Palme d’Or, winner of six Césars and more than 90 awards around the world.
