Anger of farmers: fishermen join the movement
(France Info)
Farmers and fishermen demonstrate on Saturday March 9 against the “diktats of Brussels”. They complain, among other things, about fishing quotas, the stacking of standards and technocratic directives.
The fishermen are planning around a hundred tractors to try to make themselves heard, in Boulogne-sur-Mer (Pas-de-Calais), Saturday March 9. They denounce the United Kingdom’s ban on bottom trawling in thirteen English marine areas, from March 22. However, these fishing zones are crucial for the port’s fishermen.
“These marine protected areas will prohibit us from fishing”
“When we leave Boulogne-sur-Mer, thirty minutes later, we are directly in British waters. These marine protected areas will prohibit us from fishing”, exclaims Olivier Leprêtre, president of the Regional Fisheries Committee in Hauts-de-France. Less fishing, less turnover and business losses should be expected, according to him. This ban could also cause a concentration of boats and overexploitation of resources in other marine areas.
