Landes: Biscarrosse beaches closed due to erosion
(France 2)
The beaches of Biscarrosse, in the Landes, had to be closed for safety reasons. In just a few weeks, strong winds and powerful currents severely eroded the coastline. This is unheard of in ten years.
A beach in Biscarrosse (Landes) has become a cliff, the symbol of a coastline transfigured in just a few weeks. In Biscarrosse, a hollow of several meters now separates the seafront from the ocean, revealing rocks, and even a bunker usually buried under tons of sand. The image is rare, including for the inhabitants of the seaside town. “We knew [une époque] where you could walk for miles to get into the water. I remain truly shocked, impressed and very affected”testifies a resident.
Re-sanding operations planned
In recent weeks, violent winds and powerful currents have severely eroded the coastline, to the point of having to close its access for safety reasons. This is unheard of in ten years in Biscarrosse. Re-silting operations are due to begin on Saturday March 9, during a weekend of high tides. The highest coefficient of the year, 116, is expected on Monday March 11.
