Stéphane Séjourné, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, chairs a tribute on Monday March 4 to the agents of the French Institute, victims of the conflict in Gaza. A tribute “in privacy”, specifies the Quai d’Orsay, which adds that “the families of agents who were able to be welcomed in France” will be present.

Among these four people who worked for France in the Palestinian enclave, two of them were French teachers. Fathia Azaiza died in October in circumstances that have not been disclosed. Rami Fayyad died on February 8, due to a lack of available medicine due to the blockade imposed on the Palestinian territory. He had worked for 20 years at the French Institute in Gaza. A graduate of Rouen-Normandie University, he was a doctoral student in language sciences.

Killed by Israeli bombing in Rafah

Ahmed Abu Shamla, administrative agent, had also worked for France for more than 20 years. This man, who lived in the northern Gaza Strip, died on December 16 “as a result of his injuries during an Israeli bombing in Rafah”, a city he had joined thinking he would find more security there. If part of his family had been able to be evacuated, he had chosen to stay with his adult children.

“These are moments that are difficult to experience personally, but also in connection with loved ones, with whom we remain in contact, especially their familyexplains François Tiger, the deputy director of the French Institute in Gaza. We continue to have discussions, to try to be present alongside them in these tragic moments.”

Finally the fourth name, the fourth agent, to whom the head of diplomacy paid tribute on Monday is Mohamed Qreqa, facilitator of artistic workshops. The Quai d’Orsay gives no information on the date or circumstances of his death.
