Danault’s hat trick in Kings’ 5-1 win over Devils
Quebecer Phillip Danault scored a hat trick, Kevin Fiala scored and added two assists, and the Los Angeles Kings beat the New Jersey Devils 5-1 on Sunday.
Alex Laferriere also scored, while goaltender Cam Talbot stopped 30 shots. The Kings have won eight of 12 games under interim head coach Jim Hiller.
Nico Daws allowed four goals on 13 shots and gave up his place in the second period. Timo Meier scored the Devils’ net and Akira Schmid stopped eight pucks to end the game.
The Devils took a 1-0 lead just 15 seconds into the game, following a bizarre rebound against the bay window.
However, that was all the Devils were able to provide on offense. Danault tied the score at 7:56 of play, escaping after a pass from Fiala.
Laferriere scored the game-winner with 5:11 left in the first period. It was his ninth goal of the season.
Danault scored his second of the game in the second period with 7:37 left, and Fiala scored on the power play 34 seconds later to chase Daws from the game.
Danault completed his hat trick in an empty net with 2:13 left in regulation. The Quebecer had not found the back of the net during the Kings’ first 27 home games this season.
