(Ottawa) The Canadian Media Guild announces that it has reached an agreement in principle with CBC/Radio-Canada.
The union said in a statement that the agreement was recommended by its negotiating committee and that details are currently being shared with its more than 4,400 members.
The current collective agreement was set to expire on March 31.
The guild mentions that a vote to ratify the agreement in principle will take place in a few weeks. This is a three-year agreement, the union said in a message to its members.
This agreement does not include the 2,800 employees of the French services of the public broadcaster, i.e. all of the stations in Quebec and that of Moncton, represented by the Union of Radio-Canada Workers. Their collective agreement will expire in March 2025.
Last fall, CBC/Radio-Canada announced the elimination of approximately 600 jobs and that 200 other vacant positions would not be filled due to an upcoming budget deficit of $125 million.
The Crown corporation said the government’s directive to cut its budget by 3.3% was part of the reason it was laying off 10% of its staff, but the federal government denied issuing the order.
