Israeli strikes continued in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday February 28, almost five months after the start of the war between Israel and Hamas. The bombings targeted areas of northern Gaza as well as the towns of Khan Younes and Rafah, in the south of the Palestinian enclave, according to an AFP journalist. The fighting is concentrated in Khan Younes.

Nearly 30,000 dead since the start of the war
According to the Hamas Ministry of Health, nearly 30,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the start of hostilities between the Israeli army and Hamas almost five months ago. Israeli operations in the Palestinian enclave began in retaliation for Hamas attacks in Israel on October 7, which left at least 1,160 dead, mostly civilians, according to an AFP count based on official data.
In the Gaza Strip, 29,954 Palestinians were killed, the majority civilians, according to a latest report from the Hamas Ministry of Health.
Children died of malnutrition, according to Hamas Ministry of Health
On Wednesday, Hamas health ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said two children had died “dehydration and malnutrition” at al-Chifa hospital in Gaza City. According to the same source, six children have died from the same causes in recent days.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported on Wednesday that two children died of thirst and malnutrition at Kamal Adwan hospital, in the north of the enclave. These two deaths were announced earlier this week by Ashraf al-Qudra.
The UN estimates that 2.2 million people, the vast majority of the population of the Gaza Strip, are at risk of famine.
Israeli strikes near Damascus, according to the Syrian Defense Ministry
Israel carried out strikes on targets near Damascus on Wednesday, the Syrian Defense Ministry said. These strikes take place against a backdrop of growing regional tensions since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. “The Israeli enemy launched airstrikes from the occupied Syrian Golan, targeting sites in the Damascus area”assured the ministry in a press release.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH), an NGO based in the United Kingdom but with a vast network of sources in Syria, claimed that the Israeli strikes had targeted “sites where Iranian-backed groups, including Lebanese Hezbollah, are based.”
