A debate took place between Emmanuel Macron and farmers on the morning of Saturday February 24. The president responded to questions, reproaches and anger. He pledged to take a number of steps.
Emmanuel Macron confronted farmers during the Agricultural Show, Saturday February 24. Farmers’ remuneration was at the heart of the discussions. “I can’t even pay for my daughter’s canteen”said one of them. “I don’t get a low income from my farm, I get zero incomeuro”, confided another farmer. Like him, many of them showed their anger. “[Il y aura] a floor price, below which the processor cannot buy it, and below which, subsequently, the distributor cannot sell.replied Emmanuel Macron.
Cash flow and administrative simplification
Faced with the president, a breeder raised the issue of suicides. “There is a farmer who commits suicide every two days in France. (…) In August, I almost took action”he declared, urging the president to “act very quickly” on the subject of cash flow. Emmanuel Macron promised “an emergency cash flow plan”with “a case-by-case system”. Beyond income, farmers demand administrative simplification. “We will continue to work hard on simplification, I make a solemn commitment”replied the president, who committed to “remove controls”. The exchange lasted two hours.
