The world’s most harmful hacker group has been hit hard by an international police operation. These cybercriminals have claimed responsibility for at least 1,700 attacks, for nearly 2,500 victims, including 200 in France.
They paralyzed the computer systems of hospitals, such as that of Corbeil-Essonnes (Essonne), but also of companies and departmental councils. LockBit is malicious software whose 34 servers have just been neutralized, and two people have been arrested in Poland and Ukraine, at the initiative of the Paris prosecutor’s office.
More than a billion dollars in ransoms in 2023
Since its appearance in 2019, LockBit has been responsible for 2,500 computer attacks worldwide, including 200 recorded in France by the courts. The software was designed by Russian-speaking cybercriminals, which hackers have been using for four years. For each successful attack and ransom obtained, they pay 20% to the designers of the system. In 2023, the amounts paid by victims of this software will exceed one billion dollars.
