Canada will allocate $123 million to improve security in Haiti, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly announced Thursday.
The bulk of this sum – $80.5 million – will be used to support the deployment of a multinational security support mission led by Kenya. This mission aims to support the Haitian National Police to improve security conditions for the population.
“I am pleased to announce Canada’s support for these important projects which will help pave the way for more meaningful interventions to protect the Haitian people and encourage Haitian-led efforts to restore peace and prosperity to the country” , declared Minister Mélanie Joly in a press release.
The minister also announced $42.5 million for five projects to support the country’s most pressing problems.
In particular, there is $27 million for the purchase of personal protective equipment, vehicles and logistical and communications equipment for the Haitian National Police.
Nearly six million dollars will be used to combat gang relations, while five million dollars will be dedicated to the Program for Justice and the Fight against Corruption and Impunity in Haiti.
Finally, $4.5 million will be used to strengthen Haiti’s border management capacities to improve security.
Since 2022, Canada has provided nearly $300 million in funding for Haiti.
