Quebec announced Thursday, December 30 the return of the night curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. throughout the province as of New Year’s Eve. These new restrictions come at a time when record contamination due to the spread surge of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 are recorded in Canada.
“It’s a gesture that is extreme because the situation is extreme”, declared the Prime Minister of Quebec François Legault during a press point, evoking the need to “save hospitals and save lives”. Private gatherings will now be limited to the family bubble.
The curfew will be in effect for a period that has not been specified after having been previously imposed from January to the end of May in the face of the second wave of coronavirus. It was then a measure unprecedented in Canada on a provincial scale since the Spanish flu epidemic a century ago.
Violators face a fine ranging from $ 1,000 to $ 6,000 (4,100 euros). The dining rooms will be closed as of Friday. The start of the school year in schools and universities has been postponed to January 17.
