Environment: migratory birds are back in China – (France 2)
Pollution and urbanization had driven away migratory birds, but the country reintroduced wetlands with millions. Victory, the birds have returned.
They are back in China. Oriental storks or swans who have come to hibernate far from the cold of Russia number in the thousands. Photographer Chen Jing, a regular here, clearly sees the difference in her lens: “Recently, I photographed these tundra swans. Two years ago, for example, we didn’t see any, but this year there are many of them.”
Wetland restoration
All these migratory birds had almost disappeared from the banks of the Yangtze River. Pollution, lack of protected spaces… Today, they found a base with a nature reserve accessible only by boat, to the great satisfaction of Mr. Li, director of the park: “The results are very visible. Before, there were 103 species of birds here, we have gone to 223 species.” The park has 2,600 hectares preserved, far from humans. This protected landscape required 130 million euros of investment. China has restored 800,000 hectares of wetlands in ten years.
