Pantheon: a monument that attracts more and more young people – (franceinfo)
A million people visited the Pantheon in Paris in 2023. More than a third of visitors were under 26 years old.
“Great men the grateful country”. These words, inscribed on the Pantheon (Paris), shape the history of this symbolic place with evocative names and speeches, as in 1964 with the speech by André Malraux for the entry of Jean Moulin. Politicians, writers, scientists or resistance fighters, nearly 80 personalities rest there. Over the past ten years, the necropolis has been modernized and attracts more and more visitors. In 2023, a million visitors will go there, more than a third of whom will be under 26 years old.
A curiosity for republican commitment
“The fact that the ritual of pantheonization is repeated at regular and increasingly reduced intervals places this monument in the news” and arouses the curiosity of visitors, according to Patrick Garcia, historian and professor at Cergy-Pontoise University (Val-d’Oise). According to the Center for National Monuments, visitors are attracted to the Pantheon to understand the republican commitment of the personalities honored there.
