A step forward for the rights of homosexual people. The Greek Parliament adopted, Thursday, February 15, by a large majority a bill on marriage and adoption for same-sex couples, a major societal reform despite fierce opposition from the Orthodox Church. Supported by the ruling right-wing New Democracy party of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the text was approved by 176 of the 254 deputies present in Parliament after two days of debate.

“This is a turning point for human rights, like Greece today: a progressive and democratic country, passionately attached to European values”judged the head of the Greek government, the conservative Kyriakos Mitsotakis, on the X network.

Once the law is promulgated in Greece, there will be 37 countries where same-sex adoptions are legal, or less than 20% of the 193 member states of the United Nations, according to the International Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex People (Ilga ).
