Residents of Greater Montreal woke up in fog Tuesday morning. If you were one of those who feared another episode of smog, know that you have nothing to fear.
The metropolis and its surroundings were in fact enveloped in a thick cloud which considerably reduced visibility. Around 7:20 a.m., Environment Canada spoke of “dissipating fog patches” during the morning.
This fog, however, has nothing to do with smog, underlines Michèle Fleury, meteorologist for the federal agency.
“The winds should disperse the pollutants. To have smog, you really have to be under an anticyclone, which keeps pollutants trapped. This will not be the case at all for the next few days,” she explains.
All air quality indicators were green on Tuesday, both from the City of Montreal and the Quebec Ministry of the Environment.

Meanwhile, parts of the northeastern United States were slammed by a snowstorm that canceled flights, closed schools and prompted people to avoid the roads, while some areas that had expected snow Heavy snowfall received less snow than expected due to a change in weather pattern.

The heaviest snowfall is expected in New York’s northern suburbs and southwest Connecticut, according to the National Weather Service. Gusts could reach 65 mph off the Massachusetts coast and 40 mph in inland areas of southern New England.
On the Canadian side, the storm will affect Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador. Luckily, Quebec will be largely spared, indicates Michèle Fleury.
With the exception of the northeast of Gaspésie which should receive 5 to 10 centimeters of snow starting Wednesday, accumulations will indeed be modest for the rest of the province.
